"Darkening" is the attempt to artificially sound older, bigger, or "richer" by depressing the larynx or swallowing the sound.

Focus on the Ear: Remind yourself that once the lights go down, we are all invisible. Only the listening matters.

1.  Reclaim the Chaos: Do not sanitize your art to please the "Sarastros" (critics/logic). The Queen's aria "Der Hölle Rache" is the most memorable part of the opera because of its unbridled fury.
